What fireplace cleaning actually involves in Los Angeles homes

Most LA fireplaces burn a few nights a year. That changes the job. Light seasonal use means less creosote and more of everything else: dust, spider webs, stucco grit, and nesting material. Pre-1930 bungalows and Spanish-style houses often have unlined brick. Soot sits directly on mortar joints there. Brushing an unlined flue too aggressively drops mortar into the smoke chamber. So the brush gets matched to the liner, or the lack of one.

The cleaning starts at the firebox and works up. Ash out, grate out, damper plate worked loose if it will move. Many LA dampers are rusted or painted shut and have not closed in years. Smoke shelf and smoke chamber get hand-scraped. That ledge collects more debris than the flue itself. Then the flue, then a vacuum with sealed filtration at the opening.
