What fireplace repair actually involves in Los Angeles

Quakes move masonry. The damage shows up at the crown and at the firebox corners. Older bungalows and Spanish-style homes across the basin were often built with unlined brick flues. Nothing was wrong with that in 1925. It is a problem now, because mortar joints between the firebox and the first floor framing open up over decades of ground movement.

Firebox repair is the common call. Spalled firebrick. Washed-out joints. Refractory panels cracked enough to fit a card through. Panels in factory-built metal boxes are not patched with generic mortar. They are replaced with parts matched to that model, which means reading the data plate behind the louver first. Masonry fireboxes get the brick cut out and reset in refractory mortar instead.
